Lagos Governor Inaugurates 44 Sports Association Chairmen, Tasks Them on Talent Development
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated 44 chairmen of sports associations in the state, charging them to prioritise grassroots sports development, talent identification and the creation of sustainable pathways for athletes to achieve national and international success.
Sanwo-Olu gave the charge on Tuesday during the inauguration ceremony held at Lagos House, Ikeja, describing the appointments as an important step towards repositioning sports administration and development in Lagos State.
The governor urged the newly inaugurated sports administrators to set clear and measurable objectives for their respective associations, introduce succession programmes and establish effective systems for identifying, nurturing and developing emerging talents into elite athletes.
According to him, Lagos' reputation as the Centre of Excellence must go beyond discovering talented athletes to providing them with the structures, training opportunities and competitive platforms required to become champions.
“Lagos’ reputation as a Centre of Excellence must extend beyond talent discovery to establishing the necessary structures, training opportunities, and competitive platforms to transform talents into champions,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Sports Can Drive Economic Growth
The governor described sports as more than just recreation, noting that the sector could contribute significantly to discipline, education, employment, entrepreneurship and economic growth.
“Sports is not merely recreation but a pathway to discipline, education, employment, entrepreneurship, and economic growth,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu noted that major sporting events could also create opportunities across several sectors, including hospitality, transportation, entertainment, media, technology, fitness and sports medicine.
He called for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector, stressing that increased private-sector investment would provide a stronger foundation for sports development and the growth of athletes in Lagos.
The governor also charged the new chairmen to uphold transparency, accountability and discipline, while ensuring that their respective associations maintain active and competitive sporting calendars.
He further urged them to create opportunities for women, girls, persons with disabilities and other underrepresented talents within the sporting sector.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the success of the new chairmen would ultimately be measured by the athletes they develop, the institutions they strengthen, the records they break and the champions they produce.
Lagos to Host National Intermediate Games
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted Lagos State's hosting of the National Intermediate Games, describing it as part of efforts to strengthen the state's leadership in sports development and provide young athletes from across the country with opportunities to showcase their talents.
Sports Commission Seeks Stronger Partnerships
The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, said the inauguration demonstrated the administration's commitment to strengthening sports development in the state.
Fatodu emphasised that government alone could not develop Lagos' sports sector, calling for stronger partnerships among government agencies, sports associations, athletes, coaches, corporate organisations, schools and local communities.
“Government alone cannot develop the state’s sports sector,” Fatodu said.
He described the newly inaugurated chairmen as important links between athletes and their respective sporting communities.
According to him, their responsibilities include talent identification, athlete development, competition organisation, technical capacity building and creating pathways for athletes to compete and succeed.
New Chairmen Pledge Commitment
Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated sports association chairmen, the Chairman of the Lagos State Athletics Association, Dr Solomon Alao, said the new leadership was committed to supporting the government's vision for sports development in Lagos.
“We are committed to supporting the government’s vision for sports development,” Alao said.
He said the inauguration had boosted the confidence of the chairmen in the administration's commitment to developing the various sporting associations.
Alao pledged that the new leadership would work towards delivering credible, progressive and impactful results across their respective associations.
He added that the chairmen were motivated by the confidence placed in them and were eager to work towards achieving better outcomes for athletes while contributing to the continued growth of sports in Lagos State.
